Philippaerts Delighted to Win in Estoril
In the first big class of CSI5* Estoril, worth 40,000 Euros, the leader of the Global Champions Tour ranking, Ludo Philippaerts, was successful once again. In the 1.50m jump-off round, the Belgian crossed the finish line riding Parco in 39.72 seconds. He took tremendous joy in the fact that he finished in front of his fellow countryman Dirk Demeersman, who’s time was 40.54 seconds. “He beat me last week in the Grand Prix at a Belgian international show," explained Philippaerts of the rivalry. "I was first to go and we were really quick, and then he came at the end and beat me. This morning, I told him, if you go clear I am going to beat you today!” And that’s exactly what he did. In the end, it was third place for Demeersman and Clinton as Jessica Kürten (IRL) and Castle Forbes Maike became the runner-ups in a time of 40.48 seconds.

‘On the Canadian Scene’, with Jennifer Ward
After two back-to-back weeks of show jumping in Blainville and Ottawa, you have to take your hat off to Mr. Eric Lamaze. Riding Hickstead, the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion he has been named to the World Equestrian Games (WEG) Team with, Lamaze proved to be Sunday's best two weeks running. In Blainville, he topped an eight-horse jump-off to take the $70,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec World Cup Qualifier and, in Ottawa, he was his own toughest competition, winning the $60,000 'Kubota' Big Ben Memorial Grand Prix while also finishing runner-up with Ronaldo. Conrad Homfeld, one of five course designers waiting to hear if he will get the job at the 2008 Olympic Games, built both courses.

Local Rider Wins at Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament
Taylor Brooks of Vars, ON, claimed the Reserve Championship of the Children’s Hunter division at the ‘KUBOTA’ Capital Classic Horse Show running July 12-16 at the Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON. The 15-year-old's success started on Wednesday when she piloted Monaco, her 11-year-old selle francais gelding, around the two 'over fences' classes, placing fourth and fifth. The duo came back on Friday and stepped it up, placing first as well as fourth in their two classes. Brooks' results over the two days put her in second place overall in her division, making her the Reserve Children's Hunter Champion from a field of 17 entries from across Ontario and Quebec.
