July 10, 2006 – Barrie, Ontario – Roberto Teran and Distant Star 3E claimed the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division at the latest installment of the 2006 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series held on June 30 at the Cornerstone Horse Show in Barrie, ON.

A total of 14 eligible Seven and Eight-Year-Olds competed over the course set at a height of 1.35m. Hard to beat on a good day, Distant Star 3E, a grey Canadian Sport mare that has grown up in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series, claimed the win under Roberto Teran. Bred by owner KingRidge Stables, Distant Star 3E is by Class Action and out of Betwixt by Night Twist.

World Cup v/h Lindehof, owned by Mark Hayes and Hawkstone Farms and ridden by Hyde Moffat, finished second. A Belgian Warmblood gelding, World Cup v/h Lindehof is by the recently deceased stallion, Darco, and out of Jella by Hedjaz, a selle francais sire.

Finishing third was Margie Gayford and Winston, a Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Shawn Littler and Wingberry Farms. Winston was the 2005 Canadian National Six-Year-Old Reserve Champion, and is once again showing the same good form as a seven-year-old. Sired by Wellington, Winston is out of a Cantus dam.

Winning his third Six-Year-Old Championship title since the 2006 Series opened was Baron, a selle francais gelding by Ulior des Isles out of a Narcos II dam. Imported in January by owner Mark Hayes, Baron and his rider, Hyde Moffat, have won all three of the Young Horse events that they have contested. On this occasion, they topped a three-horse jump-off by clocking in at 34.89 seconds.

Roberto Teran and Encore 3E, the winners of the last event in Troy, ON, settled for second on this outing with a clear jump-off performance in a time of 35.10 seconds. Bred by KingRidge Stables in King, ON, Encore 3E is Canadian Sport Horse by Class Action out of Alley Cat and is no stranger to the Canadian Young Horse Development Series, having competed as a four and five-year-old. Teran, a native of Colombia, also secured third place for KingRidge Stables with a four-fault jump-off effort riding Executive Privilege 3E. Like Encore 3E, Executive Privilege 3E is a Canadian Sport Horse by the KingRidge stallion, Class Action, and is out of Galaxy 3E by Aerobic Z.

Five of the top six entries in the Five-Year-Old Division were Canadian-bred, including the winner, Unbelievable, the gelding that bested a 20-horse starting field under Chris Pratt. Bred at Lothlorien Farm in Cheltenham, ON, by owner Susan Grange, Unbelievable is by Voltaire out of a thoroughbred mare that is enjoying great success in his first year of showing.

Another Canadian-bred gelding, Viva's Lightning W, took second place for owner and breeder Augustin Walch of W. Charlot Farms in Stratford, ON. A registered Hannoverian gelding, Viva's Lightning W is by Viva Voltaire out of a Sandro dam. Erynn Ballard showed the horse.

Third place went to Jennifer Gray riding Peter Rabbit, a Canadian Sport Horse by Forever out of a Zucarlos dam. Peter Rabbit was bred by his owners, Jim and Jennifer Gray of Owen Sound, ON, and is in his first year of showing.

In the Four-Year-Old Division, Hyde Moffat once again came out on top, this time riding Or de Vy, a Belgian Sport Horse gelding by Fidji du Fleury, for owner Mark Hayes. Moffat also placed third riding Courvoisier, a Holsteiner gelding by Casco, for owner Lianne Selke. Squeezing in between for second place was the Mill Creek Stables entry of Allegro, a German-bred gelding by the Hannoverian stallion, All In one, shown by Sebastien Kapel.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2006 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series will include nine events in Ontario, as well as additional events in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. The Canadian Young Horse National Championships will then be held September 20-24 during the CSI-W Tournament of Champions in Palgrave, ON. The next event in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series will take place on July 15 during the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament in Ottawa, ON.
