July 17, 2006 – Ottawa, Ontario –
Adam Hickey of Almonte, ON cleaned up at the
'KUBOTA' Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament held July 12-16 at the
Nepean National Equestrian Park in Ottawa, ON.
Throughout the week, Hickey racked up the ribbons aboard his 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Milaan B. After purchasing the big bay gelding last fall, 2006 marked Hickey's first competitive season with him. In the Non-Pro 3'6" Jumper division, held Thursday and Friday, Hickey enjoyed first, third and fourth place finishes, resulting in the overall Championship title. This earned the duo a trip into the grass Grand Prix Ring where they received a Championship cooler during the award presentations. On Friday, Hickey also placed second in the CET Medal, a two-part equitation class where riders are judged over a jumper-type course, with the top 12 coming back in for further testing on the flat. "I have qualified for the CET Regional Final in Ontario and Quebec, and my goal is to try and make it to the National Final at the Royal Horse Show," explained the 19-year-old rider. Hickey and Milaan B then contested the Junior/Amateur Section 2 Jumper division held Saturday and Sunday. Their placings of first, fourth and tenth left them in a rare three-way tie for Reserve Champion. A coin flip was the deciding factor in who would take home the Reserve Champion title and, unfortunately, an 'unlucky heads' knocked Hickey out of the tie-breaker. "Our classes went well and my horse jumped great," commented Hickey, who was competing at the Capital Classic for the second year in a row. "By the end of the week Milaan was a little tired, but he was phenomenal considering how many classes he did." "I enjoy showing at the Capital Classic, it has a good variety of rings and offers challenging courses," stated Hickey, who hopes to return next year and step up to the higher ranks of Junior/Amateur Level 3 or 4. Held in Ottawa’s west-end at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, the 'Kubota' Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament attracts more than 10,000 spectators annually.
