August 28, 2009 – Ottawa, Ontario – It was a homecoming of sorts when Roman K, a horse born and bred in Ottawa, won the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division of the 2009 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series held August 14 at the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments in Ottawa, ON.

Paul Halpern, who has guided Roman K throughout his young show jumping career, claimed victory in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division. Halpern and Roman K where clear in the first round and again in the jump-off in a time of 33.88 seconds over the course set by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil to take the win.

Roman K was bred by Ashland Farm, located just west of Ottawa in Ashton, ON. Roman K’s sire, Yavari, was a thoroughbred stallion that competed in the 1995 Pan American Games for Puerto Rico under the saddle of Alex Earle. His dam, Rivoli K, is by the famous stallion, Voltaire. A registered Canadian Sport Horse stallion, Roman K first enjoyed time in the spotlight as the winner of the Governor General’s Cup at the 2005 Royal Horse Show where he was handled by breeder Paul Morgan. Now seven years of age, Roman K is continuing his legacy in the show jumping ring for current owner CompetitiveJumpers.com. Interestingly, Roman K was the only Canadian-bred horse entered in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division.

Angie Temelini was second riding Capriato after also jumping clear in the jump-off in a time of 35.39 seconds. Owned by Windy Hill Farm of Port Perry, ON, Capriato is a seven-year-old Belgian Warmblood by Nabab de Reve out of a Heartbreaker dam.

Hyde Moffatt guided Naiade des Garins to third place for owner Mark Hayes. An eight year-old selle francais, Naiade des Garins is by the Dutch Warmblood sire, Damiro, and out of Joyeuse des Garins by Muguet du Manior.

In the Six-Year-Old Division, it was Davendy S ridden by Marie Hecart that took top honours after posting the fastest clear round in the jump-off. Owned by Torrey Pines Stable of Schomberg, ON, Davendy S is a bay Belgian Warmblood mare by Kashmir van Schutterhof and out of a Pachat II dam.

Katrina Ruotsalo’s Wiroko took second place after jumping double clear rounds with rider Cathy Inch. A registered Dutch Warmblood, Wiroko is by Tangellovande Zuuthoeve and out of an Iroko dam.

Susan Horn rode Phenix de Coquerie to third place for owner Kingsfield Farm of Toronto, ON. Bred in Normandy, France, Phenix de Coquerie features selle francais bloodlines and is by Ecalgrain out of a Nomenoe II dam.

Fourth place went to Jay Hayes who, along with his wife, Shawn, is the Co-Chair of the National Capital Show Jumping Tournaments. The two-time Olympian successfully showed Wonderboy in the Five-Year-Old Division in 2008. Owned by North Ridge of Orangeville, ON, Wonderboy is a Dutch Warmblood by Lupicor out of a Renville dam.

Frankie Chesler-Ortiz of Orangeville, ON, took the top placings in both the Five-Year-Old and the Four-Year-Old Divisions. In the Five-Year-Old Division, Chesler-Ortiz emerged victorious with Eli for owner and breeder Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON. Using a combined score for jumping and style, Eli was awarded a total score of 93.5 points. Eli is a registered Hannoverian by El Bundy out of a Rio Grande mare.

Hyde Moffatt took second place with Qairdam de Belheme, owned by Ashlyn Trevelyan, after receiving an overall score of 92 points. Bred in France, Qairdam de Belheme is by Eolien out of a Quidam de Revel dam.

Third place with a score of 88.5 points went to Lauren Hayes riding Talula for owner North Ridge. A registered Canadian Warmblood bred by Jay and Shawn Hayes, Talula is by Lux Z while the dam, Emmanuelle by Nimmador, is Lauren Hayes’s former modified grand prix mount.

Having won the Four-Year-Old Division in the last leg of the Canadian Jumping Development Series, Stevie Wonder returned to the winner’s circle in Ottawa with rider Chesler-Ortiz. Owned and bred by Mill Creek Stables, Stevie Wonder is a registered Oldenburg by Stolzenburg out a Kannan dam.

Second place went to Alazan, bred and owned by Chaldon Enterprises of Arva, ON, and ridden by Alexis Balkie. Registered Dutch Warmblood, Alazan is by Contango and out of a Good Times dam.

Yet another Canadian-bred horse took third place. Dynamo, owned and ridden by Veronique Alary of Rockland, ON, is a Canadian Warmblood sired by Dr. Pepper and out of a Singular Joter dam.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2009 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. This year, the Rocky Mountain Classic II will play host to the $20,000 Western Canadian Championships from August 28-30 in Calgary, AB.

The Ontario Championships, Eastern Canadian Championships, and National Young Horse Finals will take place at the Canadian Country Classic I at Halton Place in Halton Hills, ON, from August 26-30.

Proud supporters of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series include Jump Canada, the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association, Lothlorien Farm, Gary Cooper, Dutch Masters Construction Services Ltd., Equus Integral (exclusive Canadian distributor of Cavalor and Devoucoux), Henry Equestrian, KingRidge Stables, Dr. Alan Manning, Mill Creek Stables, Peter Miller, Preston Sand and Gravel, Jennifer Rogers, Scotia McLeod, Sher-Al Farms, and W.
