July 13, 2007 – Blainville, Quebec – Jonathon Millar of Perth, ON, claimed victory as
international show jumping competition continued at the Blainville
Equestrian Park for the second week with the CSI2* Blainville Jumping
International held July 11 to 15 in Blainville, Quebec.
Millar, 32, won the $20,000 Open Welcome following a two-horse jump-off with Canadian Olympian Mac Cone of King City, ON. Prior to the start of the class, a severe summer storm ripped through the Blainville Equestrian Park, depositing heavy rain and hail and leaving the facility without power. Although the start time was delayed several hours, the sand footing dried up for the start of the competition, giving the 16-member starting field ideal conditions to contest the $20,000 Open Welcome. Of those that tackled the course designed by Luc Musette of Belgium, only Cone and Millar were able to leave all the rails intact to qualify for the jump-off. Cone, who will represent Canada at the 2007 Pan American Games in two weeks time riding Melinda, was first on course. A rail came down at the second fence giving Cone a score of four faults in a time of 39.64 seconds riding Ole, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Sara Houstoun and Larry Evoy. The pressure was on Millar to jump clear, a feat he accomplished easily riding Fancy Hill 2, a 12-year-old grey Hannoverian mare. For his victory, Millar picked up $6,000 in prize money for owner Jebb's Creek Investments. Last week's winners of the $20,000 Open Welcome, Ainsley Vince of Milton, ON, and Catch 22, settled for third place with the fastest four-fault round of the day. A two-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion, Vince had the distinction of placing three horses in the top 10. In addition to finishing third with her veteran partner Catch 22, now 17 years old, Vince also guided the eight-year-old Cantero Z to seventh place and finished tenth with the seven-year-old Top Gun. Competition in the CSI2* Blainville Jumping International continues Saturday afternoon with the $25,000 Challenge Desjardins Modified Grand Prix while Sunday's grand finale is the $50,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Blainville beginning at 2 p.m. Located just north of Montreal, Blainville Equestrian Park features a variety of attractions that ensure all family members enjoy their visit.
