September 17, 2005 – Troy, Ontario – Margie Gayford emerged victorious in the Six-Year-Old Division of the 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series when the most recent event was held on September 11 at the Fox Run Horse Show in Troy, ON.

With three-time winner Erynn Ballard making her international debut at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament in Calgary, AB, on the same weekend, the door was wide open for a new champion in the Six-Year-Old Division. Margie Gayford was happy to step into the winner’s circle for her performance on Winston, an imported Belgian Warmblood gelding by Wellington out of a Cantus dam owned by Shawn Littler of Wingberry Farms.

Gayford of Stouffville, ON, and Winston were one of three horse-rider combinations to post a clear first-round effort and advance to the jump-off. As the final challenger, Gayford knew that all she had to do was put in another clear round to claim the victory. Despite the slow time of 45.25 seconds on the clock, her faultless performance secured the win.

With the fastest four-fault effort in the jump-off, Roberto Teran and Democrat, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Cruising, claimed second place with a time of 38.47 seconds. That edged Teran’s other ride, Double Diamond, a Belgian Warmblood stallion by Nabab de Reve, into third position with a time of 40.10 seconds. Both horses are owned by KingRidge Stables of King, ON, and although Democrat was bred by his owner, Double Diamond was purchased in Belgium.

Gayford also finished fourth with Starcatcher, a Canadian Warmblood gelding by Rio Grande that is owned by Gaylands Farm and Brian Herbinson. Hyde Moffat placed fifth with World Cup v/h Lindehof, a Belgian Warmblood gelding by Darco owned by Mark Hayes and Hawkestone Farms.

In the Five-Year-Old Division, another new face made the trip to the winner’s circle. The hotly contested competition saw Robert Sharpe and Taboo’s Tilia emerge atop the 12-horse field. A Dutch Warmblood mare by Cavalier owned by Taboo International Inc., Taboo’s Tilia was imported from Holland in 2004.

Simon McCarthy took second position riding The Livery International’s Marimbera, an imported Holsteiner gelding by Candillo. Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON, owned the third and fourth placed horses in the final standings. Sebastien Kapel of the Netherlands guided Rin Tin Tin, an imported Hannoverian gelding by Raphael, to third place while Millesime du Valy, a French-bred by Verdi that recently topped the Canadian Warmblood Stallion Inspection, was fourth.

Riding the only Canadian-bred horse to place in the top five was Roberto Teran. Owned by KingRidge Stables, Executive Privilege is a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by KingRidge’s own stallion, Class Action, and out of an Aerobic Z dam.

Natalie Smith topped the Four-Year-Old Division riding Josephine, a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Forever, for owner Elizabeth Salmon. Kapel guided Valvoline, a German-bred Hannoverian by Voltaire, to second place and also took fourth place with Roger Rabbit, a German-bred Hannoverian gelding by Raphael, for owner Mill Creek Stables. Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill was third with Tim Millard’s VDL Ulando H, a fully approved Canadian Warmblood stallion by Corland out of an Ahorn dam.

Coming into the Ontario Championships to be held on September 22 and 23 at the CSI-W Tournament of Champions in Palgrave, ON, Erynn Ballard continues to dominate the overall standings. She holds both first and second place in all three of the age categories – the Six-Year-Old Division with Windus and Possibilities, the Five-Year-Old Division with Trocadero and Pour Patrice W, and the Four-Year-Old Division with Vasco Da Gama and Pour La Vie W.

Following the Ontario Championships, a maximum of 15 horses from the Five and Six-Year-Old standings advance to the famed Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON, where they will compete in the National Finals on Monday, November 7.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development as four, five and six-year-olds. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The Ontario Hunter Jumper Association, together with its proud supporters - 4 Star Trailers, TD Waterhouse, Scotia McLeod, Peter Miller, Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, W. Charlot Farms, Gary Cooper Chev Olds, Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd., Dutch Masters Construction Services Ltd., Dr. Al Manning, Brubacher’s Harness Shop, KingRidge Stables, Mr. Charles Ormston, the Hannoverian Breeders Club of Eastern Canada, Mr. Michael Boyd, Mrs. Elaine Gray, and other friends present the 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.
