August 14, 2005 – Dinard, France – Rutherford Latham of Spain continued the string of victories recently enjoyed by JustWorld Rider Representatives with his win in the Grand Prix of Dinard on August 7 at CSI* Dinard, France. Immediately following his victory, he became the first professional Rider Representative to donate 100% of his prize money earnings to JustWorld International, a not-for-profit, humanitarian organization founded to work as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world by helping underprivileged children.

>From a large starting field of 62 entries, Latham was one of three riders to post double clear rounds in the two-round Grand Prix event. With a time of 48.28 seconds, Latham was more than two seconds faster than the second-placed competitor who stopped the clock at 50.58 seconds. Latham was aboard Guarana Champeix, an 11-year-old selle francais stallion owned by Susana Garcia Cereceda.

“He is a very talented stallion that I have been riding for four years, and he was very generous in his effort in the Grand Prix,” noted Latham, 50, who earlier this year helped Spain claim victory in the Samsung Nations’ Cup held in Linz, Austria. “My strategy was to jump clear again in the jump-off and hopefully be faster than the other three riders still to follow me.

I have decided to donate all of my prize money from this Grand Prix victory to JustWorld International because I believe in the organization’s mission and I am impressed with what it has accomplished in such a short time,” stated Latham, a three-time Olympian who is based in France.

“Rafi is a wonderful rider and a true perfectionist,” noted Jessica Newman, Executive Director of JustWorld International. “When he competes, he normally tries for a beautiful double clear rather than risking it all for the win. After his clear first round, I saw him and I told him to ‘go for it and win for JustWorld!’ I told him to think of all the malnourished children he could help by winning the prize money and donating it to JustWorld International. My comments must have motivated him because he picked up the pace right from the first jump. He was slick and very neat through all the cut backs, and then left out several strides to the last jump! When he knew he had won, he told me that he did it for JustWorld.”

JustWorld International Rider Representatives include Angela Covert-Lawrence of Canada, Kevin Babington of Ireland, Christophe Barbeau of Switzerland, James Benedetto of the United States, Federico Fernandez of Mexico, Marcus Fuchs of Switzerland, Herve Godignon of France, Imke Hofschroer of Germany, Eric Lamaze of Canada, Rutherford Latham of Spain, Olivier Guillon of France, Candice King of the United States, Peter Leone of the United States, Titi Mills of Honduras, Eric Navet of France, Ludo Philippaerts of Belgium, Philippe Rozier of France, Tim Stockdale of Great Britain, Ray Texel of the United States, Marilyn Vorpe of Switzerland and Gregory Wathelet of Belgium. Through various initiatives, including donating a portion of their prize money and giving clinics to benefit JustWorld International and encouraging their owners, sponsors and youth to follow their lead, riders are able to support the organization’s projects and programs.

Founded in 2002, JustWorld International offers volunteer opportunities for students from around the globe to learn leadership skills and acquire the tools necessary to make a positive difference in the world. Cooperating with local partners, JustWorld International implements sustainable, culturally sensitive projects that benefit underprivileged children. JustWorld International trains and empowers international and local university student volunteers to create and realize these projects, providing them with hands-on experience in promoting social justice. With three project sites located in Cambodia, Honduras and Senegal, as well as a new initiative being launched in Kenya, students are working for change in a wide variety of environments on behalf of JustWorld International.
