July 22, 2005 – Port Mort, France – The newest JustWorld Rider Representative, Tim
Stockdale of Great Britain, enjoyed a successful week of competition at
CSI3* Port Mort, FRA, held July 14 to 17, 2005.
The first Rider Representative representing Great Britain, Stockdale won the first class he competed in immediately after signing his contract with JustWorld International, and finished third in Sunday’s Grand Prix. Stockdale attributed his luck to the fact that he had just partnered with a great cause. JustWorld International is a not-for-profit, humanitarian organization founded to work as a catalyst for positive change in the developing world and helping underprivileged children. Numerous international show jumping athletes support this initiative by donating a portion of their prize money and giving clinics to benefit JustWorld International as well as encouraging their owners, sponsors and clients to follow their lead in supporting the organization’s projects and programs. Stockdale, riding Fresh Direct Cloudy Night, posted the fastest four-fault round in the 36,000 Euro Port Mort Grand Prix to place third. Fellow JustWorld Rider Representative Gregory Wathelet of Belgium, who also incurred four faults riding Mozart des Hayettes, immediately followed Stockdale in the standings. Three more Rider Representatives, all from France, placed in the top 12. Philippe Rozier was fifth riding Ideal de Prissey, 1990 World Champion Eric Navet was 11th aboard Gentleman Platiere and 1992 Olympic Bronze Medalist Herve Godignon, placed 12th aboard Obelix. JustWorld International received tremendous support from the second annual CSI3* Port Mort held at Haras Seabird, the site of JustWorld’s European launch one year ago. Show organizers Herve and Olivia Godignon arranged for several activities to benefit the not-for-profit organization. Proceeds from the parking were donated, a painting by well-known French artist Alain Smout was auctioned off in the VIP tent for 1,200 Euros, a Calcutta for Sunday’s Grand Prix raised 700 Euros, and one of the international judge’s donated his entire show salary to JustWorld International. Official horse show photographer and JustWorld partner, Thierry Billet of Sportfot, donated a portion of his earnings on photos sold of the JustWorld Rider Representatives to the organization. The signature JustWorld fence remained on the field for the duration of the show, and both the jump crew and television crew were colourfully dressed in JustWorld International orange hats and royal blue polo shirts. On Sunday, for a televised audience, singer Karen Anton, best known for last year’s hit single with Bonnie Tyler, delivered the national anthem wearing the JustWorld shirt and hat while sitting astride Calypso, ridden to victory in the Grand Prix last year by Godignon. Horse show announcer Andre Jacques Le Goupil also gave the crowd great incentive to support JustWorld through his constant enthusiasm. He was speaking from first-hand experience, having been part of a delegation that visited a JustWorld project site in Honduras in March. When not in the show ring, the JustWorld Rider Representatives could often be found at the extremely popular JustWorld information booth, kindly donated by the show, where Angela Covert-Lawrence, who flew over from Canada and competed in the CSI* Ladies competition on a borrowed horse, Olivier Guillon, Navet, Rozier, Stockdale and Wathelet autographed JustWorld posters that were sold to fans. The JustWorld clothing for sale at the booth was completely sold-out by Sunday, and the launch of a JustWorld International membership club, which saw numerous people join for a fee of 75 Euros, meet with great success. “This show was like a dream!” raved JustWorld International Executive Director Jessica Newman. “I cannot give enough credit to Herve and Olivia, and the whole team for putting on such an incredible international event only now in its second year. It was beautiful, well run, offered an incredible ambiance and family-like atmosphere, and yet was incredibly professional. “I am speechless as to everything they did for JustWorld International,” continued Newman. “Between all the benefit activities, visibility and varied announcements by the best animator in the world - Andre Jacques le Goupil – JustWorld enjoyed an incredible show. The atmosphere and activities attracted an astonishing number of new members in only four days, all signing on and participating in different ways. I especially want to thank our Junior volunteers, Laura and Marion Spillemaecker and Virgile, Clara and Julien Moneron, who sold more merchandise and tickets then we could have ever imagined! And my two right arms, Alexis Granelli and Laetitia Le Chat Ruffaut, who worked from morning to night to make sure all our activities ran smoothly and efficiently, always with a smile and great attitude! We raised approximately 10,000 Euros directly from the show and many more significant pledges are expected!” In addition to the numerous JustWorld Rider Representatives in attendance, several more signed on. Joining Stockdale on the impressive roster are American competitors James Benedetto and Olympic Silver Medalist Peter Leone, French Young Rider Pauline Guigery, and junior competitors Alexia Simonnard-Note and Arthur Bataille. Several Board members were also at CSI3* Port Mort, which is unique in that it also offers junior and amateur divisions, a rarity at European competitions, to show their support including Serge Houtmann and Nelson Pessoa, who both sit on the ‘Jump for a Just World’ Advisory Board along with Godignon, who does double duty as a Rider Representative. And well-known Olympic Gold Medalist and recently appointed French Secretary of Sport, Pierre Durand, approached JustWorld International about joining its Advisory Board, an offer it was more than happy to accept given Durand’s prominent stature and influence. “What touched me the most was to see the amount of interest, enthusiasm and support for JustWorld International in the equestrian world, which has multiplied exponentially in only one year’s time,” noted Newman, a former grand prix competitor who now concentrates her efforts on JustWorld International. “I believe in JustWorld International 1,000%, but what makes me the happiest is knowing that the organization has taken on a life of its own.” JustWorld International Rider Representatives include Angela Covert-Lawrence of Canada, Kevin Babington of Ireland, Christophe Barbeau of Switzerland, Federico Fernandez of Mexico, Marcus Fuchs of Switzerland, Herve Godignon of France, Imke Hofschroer of Germany, Eric Lamaze of Canada, Rutherford Latham of Spain, Olivier Guillon of France, Candice King of the United States, Titi Mills of Honduras, Eric Navet of France, Ludo Philippaerts of Belgium, Ray Texel of the United States, Marilyn Vorpe of Switzerland and Gregory Wathelet of Belgium. Through various initiatives, including donating a portion of their prize money and giving clinics to benefit JustWorld International and encouraging their owners, sponsors and youth to follow their lead, riders are able to support the organization’s projects and programs. Founded in 2002, JustWorld International offers fellowship programs for students from around the globe to learn leadership skills and acquire the tools necessary to make a positive difference in the world. Cooperating with local partners, JustWorld International implements sustainable, culturally sensitive projects that benefit underprivileged children. JustWorld International trains and empowers international and local university student volunteers to create and realize these projects, providing them with hands-on experience in promoting social justice. With three project sites located in Cambodia, Honduras and Senegal, students are working for change in a wide variety of environments on behalf of JustWorld International.
