June 21, 2005 – Palgrave, Ontario – For Erynn Ballard, the possibilities are endless
when it comes to the 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development
Series. In addition to winning the Six-Year-Old Division with
Possibilities when the second event in the Series was held on June 17
during the Caledon Summer Classic in Palgrave, ON, Ballard also placed
first and second in the Four-Year-Old Division and was second in the
Five-Year-Old Division.
Ballard, 25, of Hornby, ON, and Possibilities were one of seven horse-rider combinations to advance to the jump-off from the original 31-horse starting field. Their second clear round in a time of 37.95 seconds couldn’t be beat, and the pair found themselves claiming the first place ribbon after finishing third two weeks ago in the season opener. Possibilities, owned by Jamie Richardson of Caledonia, ON, is a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Monaco out of a Burggraaf dam. Four male riders followed Ballard in the standings. Hyde Moffat, also 25, guided Denver to second place with another clear effort in the jump-off despite the fact that the chestnut Trakehner gelding had only been imported from Germany one month earlier. Denver, who is by the Trakehner stallion, Donauwalzer, is owned by Hawkestone Farms. Rob Carey of Kleinburg, ON, took third and fourth place with two double-clear rounds. With Leica, a Rheinlander mare by Lancer II owned by Lindsay Smith, Carey placed third while Liz Currie’s Carolla Z, a Zangersheide mare by the grey stallion, Cumano, who won the $1 million CN Grand Prix last year at Spruce Meadows for Belgium’s Jos Lansink, was fourth. Peter Gisborn riding VDL Sybolt, a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Emilion and out of a Nimmerdor dam, for Hogendoorn Sport Horse Imports rounded out the top five.
Ballard just missed scoring a hat trick, finishing second with Pour Patrice W. Bred by W. Charlot Farms of Stratford, ON, Pour Patrice W is a Hannoverian gelding by Pour Gagne and out of a Rio Grande dam. Owned by Charles Ormston, Pour Patrice W was the Four-Year-Old Champion in 2004, having won five of the seven events he contested. Short-listed Canadian Show Jumping Team member, Chris Pratt, rode Split Decision to third place. Recently imported from the Netherlands by owner Susan Grange of Lothlorien Stables, Split Decision is a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Calido out of a Continue dam. Mill Creek Stables took fourth place with its entry of Rin Tin Tin, a German-bred Hannoverian by Raphael ridden by Sebastien Kapel of The Netherlands, while Colombia’s Roberto Teran steered Encore, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Class Action, to fifth place for owner KingRidge Stables. Ballard again found herself in the winner’s circle in the Four-Year-Old Division. In fact, she was her own best competition, taking both first and second for owner W. Charlot Farms of Stratford, ON. She claimed top honours with Vasco da Gamma, a Hannoverian stallion by Voltaire and out of a Raphael dam that was imported from Germany. Second place went to Pour la Vie W, a Hannoverian stallion that, like Pour Patrice W, is by Pour Gagne and out of a Rio Grande dam. Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill had the ride on Tim Millard’s VDL Ulando H, guiding the licensed Canadian Warmblood breeding stallion by Corland and out of an Ahorn dam to third place. Mill Creek Stables took fourth place with Roger Rabbit, a Hannoverian by Raphael ridden by Sebastien Kapel, while Natalie Smith rode Josephine, a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Forever, to fifth place for owner Liz Salmon. The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development as four, five and six-year-olds. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting. The 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series has been extended to include ten events. The next competition will take place on June 24 during the Cornerstone Farms Horse Show in Barrie, ON.
