February 15, 2005 – Wellington, Florida – The newest JustWorld International Rider
Representative, Cayce Harrison of Chicago, IL, enjoyed a second place
finish in the $50,000 Kilkenny Internationale Cup Grand Prix held
Sunday, February 13, in Wellington, FL.
At 20 years of age, Harrison was one of only three riders to master the first round track by British course designer Robert Ellis and advance to the jump-off where she would face off against two Olympians. Laura Kraut was the first to challenge riding Anthem, managing to leave all the jumps up and blazing through the timers in 43.50 seconds. Her Sydney Olympic teammate, Lauren Hough, followed, but four faults early on course with Calisko left the door open for Harrison. Despite having the advantage of being the final challenger, a rail down three fences from home cost Harrison the win, although her time with Coeur, a nine-year-old grey Holsteiner gelding, was good enough for second place. “It was a little bit intimidating to be in the jump-off with those two when I am just starting to compete at this level,” noted Harrison, who trains with Barney and McLain Ward. “I knew they would both be tough to beat. I didn’t get to see Laura’s ride, but I knew she had been fast.” The second place finish netted Harrison $11,000 in prize money, a portion of which she donates to JustWorld International. Fittingly, her best Grand Prix result to date came just one day before leaving for Honduras to visit one of the JustWorld International project sites. “I am really excited about the trip and learning more about what the organization is all about,” said Harrison, who became a rider representative for JustWorld International in January. “I have worked with some volunteer organizations before, but it was hard to continue giving my time on a consistent basis because of school and all of the traveling and showing that I do. By donating prize money to JustWorld International, I can keep my regular competition schedule and still help others at the same time.” JustWorld International is a not-for-profit, humanitarian organization founded to prepare and empower students to become visionary leaders and work for social justice by assisting orphans and underprivileged children. While in Honduras, Harrison will have the opportunity to witness first-hand the difference her donated prize money will make in the daily lives of those children. “I think that when we are riding and competing, we can get a little consumed by it and stay in a bubble while there are people out there that are not as fortunate and need our help,” said Harrison about her motivation for becoming a JustWorld International Rider Representative. “Cayce was really great in the jump-off, and her fantastic performance sends us off to Honduras on a high note,” said JustWorld International Executive Director Jessica Newman. “I am really proud that so many young people have chosen to become involved in our organization and are so generously giving their prize money in order to help those who are less fortunate. And not only are they giving their prize money, they are committed to visiting our project sites and seeing exactly how the children are benefiting from their donations.” JustWorld International Rider Representatives include Angela Covert of Canada, Kevin Babington of Ireland, Christophe Barbeau of Switzerland, Marcus Fuchs of Switzerland, Herve Godignon of France, Imke Hofschroer of Germany, Eric Lamaze of Canada, Rutherford Latham of Spain, Olivier Guillon of France, Candice King of the United States, Titi Mills of Honduras, Eric Navet of France, Ludo Philippaerts of Belgium, Ray Texel of the United States, and Gregory Wathelet of Belgium. Through various initiatives, including donating a portion of their prize money or giving clinics to benefit JustWorld International, riders are able to support the organization’s projects and programs. Founded in 2002, JustWorld International offers fellowship programs for students from around the globe to learn leadership skills and acquire the tools necessary to make a positive difference in the world. With three project sites located in Cambodia, Honduras and Senegal, students are working for change in a wide variety of environments on behalf of JustWorld International.
