Carly Campbell Cooper Gallops to Victory
In $10,000 Francois Ferland Cup at the Quebec City Horse Show

October 9, 2004 – Quebec, Quebec – The inaugural $10,000 Francois Ferland Cup, held during the Quebec City Horse Show in honour of the prolific FEI Judge, proved to be a class for the superstars of tomorrow as all top five placings went to up-and-coming riders.

Carly Campbell Cooper of Elora, ON, galloped to victory riding Croft Temptation in the ‘Hit and Hurry’ competition where riders had the opportunity to jump as many fences as possible in a set amount of time. As the eighth of 22 riders to tackle the challenge set by course designer Robert Jolicoeur, Campbell Cooper took a daring inside turn that helped her make the most of the time allowed and gain a valuable 24 points.

“It was really fun to go fast and have the crowd really get excited,” said Campbell Cooper, who also placed fourth riding her nine-year-old grey Belgian Warmblood mare, Santa Lucia. “I know Croft Temptation so well, so I trust him completely.”

Partnered with Croft Temptation, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Campbell Cooper was a member of the Gold Medal Team at the 2003 North American Young Riders’ Championship in Bromont, QC, where Francois Ferland acted as President of the Jury.

“It is really special to win this class, Mr. Ferland has done so much for our sport, and especially has promoted Canada internationally,” said Campbell Cooper, a 23-year-old Honours student at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.

Another potential Canadian Show Jumping Team member, Hyde Moffat, 25, of Brantford, ON, took second place riding Cezanne Z, an eight-year-old mare owned by Peter Cullen. 22-year-old Nicolas-Xavier Belanger of Calixa-Lavalee, QC, placed third riding Marc Sabbah’s Gyttja. Sabbah purchased the seven-year-old Hannoverian mare by Grannus at the end of the Florida circuit in March, and, interested in supporting young talent, gave the horse to Belanger, an amateur rider.

Marc Sabbah also owns the fifth placed horse, Heve de Mazure, a nine-year-old selle francais mare ridden by Angela Covert- Lawrence of Hudson, QC. Covert-Lawrence, 28, has enjoyed impressive results in the grand prix division this year including a win in the $35,000 Grand Prix at the Vermont Summer Festival in July.

The inaugural $10,000 Francois Ferland Cup, was awarded to Campbell Cooper in honour of the internationally-respected judge who has officiated at every major championship event, including this summer’s Olympic Games in Athens. Still residing in his birthplace of St Jean Chrysostome, QC, Mr. Ferland has judged at the Quebec City Horse Show since its inception in 1979. A special banquet dinner was held following the event for competitors, officials and sponsors with Mr. Ferland as the guest of honour.

Held October 7-10 at Expo Cite, the Quebec City Horse Show is an indoor event offering over $120,000 in prize money. On Sunday, the horse show culminates with the $50,000 Grand Prix du Quebec at 3 p.m., followed by the ever-popular $5,000 Horse-Dog Relay. The $5,000 Hunter Classic will also take place on Sunday.
