Thunderbird Show Park goes ‘horseless’ for JustWorld International and the children of Honduras

August 21, 2009 – Langley, BC – Among the classes at this weekend’s Summer Festival Show Jumping Tournament at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley will be a few that don’t require a horse at all. The Horseless Horse Show and silent auction takes place on Saturday, August 22, at 2 p.m., raising funds for the Honduras Educational Supplies Project through JustWorld International.

The Horseless Horse Show invites children of all ages to compete on foot in a variety of different classes including Children’s Hunter, Children’s Jumper, Pair Relay Jumpers and a very special Grand Prix riders class. Navigating a course of equestrian show jumps, competitors will vie for ribbons while helping the Park raise funds to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in Honduras. Entertaining and fun for competitors and spectators alike, the Horseless Horse Show has become one of JustWorld’s trademark fundraising events.

While school up to grade six is technically free in Honduras, the necessary materials to attend and the tutoring programs required to excel are often out of reach for many children. Through the Honduras Educational Supplies Project, JustWorld International raises funds to provide uniforms, books, notepads, pens, pencils, erasers and dictionaries that enable effective learning.

JustWorld International also supports several other grassroots projects in Honduras, including scholarships for high-achieving students, a mobile library that offers literacy programs and access to books, and a painting program for at-risk youth. In order to house these growing programs, JustWorld is building a community center where they can all be administered together under one roof.

This will be the inaugural year of the Horseless Horse Show at Thunderbird Show Park and organizers expect it to be a very special event.

“It’s an opportunity for our spectators and competitors to make a difference in another part of the world,” explains Jane Tidball, President of Thunderbird Show Park. “We know it will put a lot of smiles on faces both here and in Honduras, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Founded in 2002 by international equestrian champion, Jessica Newman, JustWorld International has worked to bring together the equestrian community and others with the goal of improving the lives of disadvantaged children in the developing world. With show jumping riders around the world signing up to become JustWorld Rider Ambassadors, Newman has mobilized some of the sport's biggest names towards supporting JustWorld’s projects in Brazil, Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Kenya. There are currently over 200 Rider Ambassadors from 27 different countries, ranging from nine-year-old pony riders to Olympic medalists, who help bring attention to JustWorld International’s cause.

JustWorld International raises awareness and funds in the equestrian community to support humanitarian projects that benefit impoverished communities and children in the developing world. Cooperating with local partners, JustWorld International implements sustainable, culturally sensitive education, health and vocational projects.
