Viva’s Victory W, bred and owned by W. Charlot Farms and ridden by Kevin Maxie, won the Four-Year-Old Division of the 2009 Canadian Young Horse Development Series held June 20 during the Summer Classic in Palgrave, ON.
June 25, 2009 – Palgrave, Ontario – The second leg of the 2009 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series took place on Saturday, June 20, in rainy conditions during the Summer Classic at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, ON.

The Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division was dominated by owner and breeder, KingRidge Stables of King, ON. Rider Hugh Graham claimed victory by winning the jump-off with Fifth Estate 3E, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Class Action out of Alley Cat by Emilion.

Hot on Graham’s heels was fellow KingRidge stable jockey Roberto Teran, who finished in second place with Grand Slam 3E, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Jamestown out of Celeste by Challenger, also bred and owned by KingRidge Stables. Teran rode Grand Slam 3E to a clear ride in the jump-off but wasn’t quick enough to catch the quick pace set by Graham.

Frankie Chesler-Ortiz of Orangeville, ON, rode Eragon to a third place finish. Owned by Sher-Al Farms, Eragon is an Argentinean thoroughbred by Cartoon out of a Dimance mare.

The KingRidge Stables domination continued in the Six-Year-Old Division with Hugh Graham winning yet again, this time with the Canadian Sport Horse, Holy Smoke 3E. The pair posted the fastest clear round in the jump-off to secure victory. Bred and owned by KingRidge Stables, Holy Smoke 3E is by Jamestown out of Galaxy 3E by Aerobic.

Finishing close behind in second was Jay Hayes and Wonderboy, a Dutch Warmblood by Lupicor out of a Renville mare. Although Hayes and Wonderboy, owned by North Ridge, also posted a double clear effort, their time wasn’t quite quick enough to catch Graham.

Taking third position was Phenix De Coquerie ridden by Susan Horn for owner Kingsfield Farm of Toronto, ON. Horn piloted the selle francais by Ecalgrain out of Epire de la Rose by Nomenoe II clearly around the jump-off course but incurred two time faults for exceeding the time allowed.

Jumping into fourth place was Roberto Teran riding Heads Up 3E, another young horse bred and owned by KingRidge Stables. Similar to class winner Holy Smoke 3E, Heads Up 3E is a Canadian Sport Horse sired by Jamestown and out of a Class Action mare. They also jumped clear but incurred two time faults in the jump-off.

Claiming fifth place position was Johan Letimonier and North Ridge’s Troy, a Canadian Warmblood by Indoctro out of Phoebe by Flipper. Despite having the quickest time of the day, an unlucky knock-down near the end of the course prevented them from clinching victory. Rounding out the top six was Cathy Inch riding Katrina Routsalo’s Dutch Warmblood, Wiroko, by Tangellovande Zuuthoeve out of an Iroko mare.

The Five-Year-Old Division highlighted the quality of Canadian breeding programs as four of the top six horses were bred in Canada. Of the five horses that posted a clear round, Espresso B, ridden by Carly Campbell Cooper, received the highest style score of the day, 42 points, from style judge Alan Chesler. A bay Hannoverian gelding by Earl out of Remington B by Ramiro’s Bube, Espresso B is owned by his breeder, Michael Boyd.

KingRidge Stables saw yet another one of its horses recognized for its jumping skills. Roberto Teran rode Interlude 3E, a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Double Diamond out of Celeste II by the Holsteiner stallion Challenger to a second place finish, jumping clear and receiving a style score of 40.5 points.

Third place went to Katherine Vanruyven and Rocky, a Canadian Sport Horse by Rio’s Shadow out of a Polifax mare and owned by Big V Farm. Returning to the Canadian Young Horse Series after successfully competing in the four-year-old division last year, Rocky jumped clear and received a style score of 39.5 points.

Finishing fourth with a clear round and a style score of 38.5 points was Allison Zlepnig riding Lino, owned by the Ottawa Southway Inn Group. Imported from Germany as a three-year-old, Lino is an Oldenburg stallion by Lordanos out of Fiane by Pablo.

Finishing in fifth place was Hugh Graham riding In the Cards 3E, a Canadian Sport Horse gelding by Double Diamond out of a Pion mare. Bred and owned by KingRidge Stables, In the Cards 3E had one knockdown in the first round of competition, and received a style score of 37.5.

Closing out the top six was Duvel, ridden by Mac McQuaker and owned by Gryphon Farms. Duvel is a Dutch Warmblood by Ovidius out of a Nabour mare. McQuaker and Duvel had one rail down and received a style score of 37 points.

The Four-Year-Old Division saw Kevin Maxie claim both first and second place with Viva’s Victory W and Viva’s Destiny W, respectively. Both sired by the Hannoverian stallion Viva Voltaire, the Canadian Warmblood half-siblings each soared their way to a clear round, but it was Viva’s Victory W who clinched the victory with the higher style score of 40.5 points. Viva’s Destiny W followed closely behind with a style score of 38 points. Both horses are owned by breeder Augustin Walch and his W. Charlot Farms of Stratford, ON.

Carly Campbell-Cooper finished in third place with Go Figure, a Canadian Sport Horse by Indoctro out of a Consul mare, owned by Triple C Stables of Elora, ON. Karen Henderson and Grande Farms’ Cattu, a Canadian Warmblood by Catrick II out of First Class by For Pleasure, finished in fourth place.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2009 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. This year, The Rocky Mountain Classic II will play host to the $20,000 Western Canadian Championships from August 28-30 in Calgary, Alberta. After being held at Thunderbird Showpark in Langley, BC for the last three years, the move to Calgary in 2009 will encourage more participation from Alberta owners and breeders.

The Ontario Championships, Eastern Canadian Championships, and National Young Horse Finals will also change venues this year, and will take place at the Canadian Country Classic at Halton Place in Halton, ON, from September 9-13.

The next event in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series will take place during the CornerStone at Bronte Creek horse show in Milton, ON, running from July 1-5.

Proud supporters of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series include Jump Canada, the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association, Gary Cooper, Dutch Masters Construction Services Ltd., Equus Integral (Canadian distributor of Cavalor and Devoucoux), 4 Star Trailers, Henry Equestrian, KingRidge Stables, Dr. Alan Manning, Mill Creek Stables, Peter Miller, Preston Sand and Gravel, Jennifer Rogers, Scotia McLeod, Sher-Al Farms, and W.
