May 10, 2008 – Troy, Ontario – The 2008 Canadian Young Horse Development Series opened on Sunday, May 4, at the Fox Run Spring Horse Show in Troy, ON.

Hyde Moffatt rode both the winner and the runner-up in the Six-Year-Old Division for two different owners. Moffatt posted the only clear round of the day to take the victory riding Candide van het Kastanjehof. Owned by Mark Hayes, the Belgian Warmblood gelding is sired by Thunder van he Zuuthoeve and out of Revelerie et Kastanjehof by Quito de Baussy.

With the fastest four-fault effort, Moffatt also placed second with Rimrock for owner Elizabeth Bates. The German Warmblood is by the Holsteiner sire Ramirado and out of a German Warmblood mare, Sunshine.

Two horses sharing the same name took third and fourth positions. Valentino, a Canadian Warmblood sired by Burggraff and owned by breeder Tami Mairs, had four faults with Carly Campbell Cooper to place third while Louise Masek’s Valentino K, a grey Canadian Sport Horse sired by Indorado, also had four faults but in a slower time to take fourth. Shadrach, a Canadian Warmblood sired by Eastern Ruler and bred by owner Pat Allen, rounded out the top five under rider Louise Waterfall.

The Five-Year-Old Division proved to be a battle between owners Mark Hayes and Mill Creek Stables with the later coming out on top. Bal Pare, an imported Oldenburg by Baloubet du Rouet out of a Landfriese II mare, was ridden to victory by Carly Campbell Cooper. The pair jumped clear and received the highest style score of the day. Having placed fourth in last year’s National Young Horse Finals, Bal Pare is continuing to develop through the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.

Mark Hayes took both second and third positions when his horses jumped clear rounds under Hyde Moffatt with the style score being the deciding factor. The second-placed Phenix de Coquerie is a selle francais by Ecalgrain out of Epire de la Rose by Nomenoe II. Privilege is also a registered selle francais, but is Canadian-bred, sired by Ilian de Taute and out of Lryic by the Hannoverian sire, Laptop.

Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON, took fourth and fifth with Celentano and Veda respectively, both under Carly Campbell Cooper. Celentano is a Westphalian by Chellano out of an Alme dam while Veda, a Canadian Warmblood bred by Jennifer Wallace, is by Indoctro out of Lelanca by Concorde.

The top four finishers in the Four-Year-Old Division were all Canadian-bred. Winner Cassius Clay was clear and received the highest style score to secure victory for owner and rider Lyda Bostock. Bred by Grande Farms of Orangeville, ON, Cassius Clay is a Canadian Warmblood by Catrick II out of First Class by For Pleasure.

Infinity, a Canadian Warmblood bred by Mill Creek Stables, was second for owners Nadia and Allan McConnell. Ridden by Peter Gisborne, Infinity is a Canadian Warmblood sired by Indoctro and out of Charlie’s Angel by Rio Grande.

Third place went to the Mill Creek Stables entry of Ruby Tuesday ridden by Carly Campbell Cooper. The registered Oldenburg is by Royal Bravour out of No Doubt by Cambridge. Vivian Millard guided Expresso B, a registered Hannoverian by Earl out of Remington B by Ramiro’s Bube, to fourth place for owner and breeder Michael Boyd.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2008 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. A total of 12 events will be held in Quebec, eight in Ontario, two in Alberta and five in British Columbia, including the Western Canadian Finals which will take place at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC, from August 20-24.

The Ontario Championships, Eastern Canadian Finals and National Young Horse Finals will feature $75,000 in prize money and will be held at CSI-W Tournament of Champions from September 17-21 in Palgrave, Ontario.
