July 22, 2005 – Ottawa, Ontario – Erynn Ballard of Hornby, ON, and Windus jumped into the Nation’s Capital to win the Six-Year-Old Division of the 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series when it was hosted by the Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament on Sunday, July 17, in Ottawa, ON.

For the second week in a row, Canadian course designer Danny Foster set the track in the Young Horse Series. A total of 29 entries attempted the course set on the grass grand prix field, but it was Ballard who took the win riding Windus. A Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Holter Leasing, Windus is by Skippy II, the same sire as Ballard’s own Grand Prix mount, Robin Van Roosendael.

A short-listed member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team, Ballard also took third place riding Rio’s Ricardo, a Canadian Warmblood stallion by Rio Grande, for owner Augustin Walch and W. Charlot Farms. Interestingly, Rio’s Ricardo was the only Canadian-bred horse to place among the top five in the Six-Year-Old Division.

Placing second was another short-listed rider, Hyde Moffat of Brantford, ON. Although Denver, a German Trakehner gelding by Donauwalzer, was only imported to Canada a short time ago, the pair have formed a strong partnership and are experiencing great success in this year’s Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.

Velbo Z, owned by Dingemanse House, took fourth place under 1996 Canadian Olympian Chris Delia while Carolla Z, ridden by Rob Carey and owned by Liz Currie, rounded out the top five. Carolla Z was bred by the Zangersheide Stud in Belgium and is by Cumano, winner of the $1 million CN Grand Prix at the 2004 Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament in Calgary, AB, under Belgian Olympian, Jos Lansink.

Ballard also enjoyed victory in the Five-Year-Old Division, topping a 17-horse starting field. This time, she was aboard her own Trocadero, a Dutch Warmblood gelding by Nassau out of a Quidam de Revel dam. Again, Ballard placed third, this time riding the 2004 Ontario Four-Year-Old Champion Pour Patrice W owned by Charles Ormston. Bred in Canada by W. Charlot Farms of Stratford, ON, Pour Patrice W is by Pour Gagne and out of a Rio Grande dam.

Tonya Henning, preparing to make her debut at the 2005 North American Young Riders’ Championship, placed second and fourth riding for Mill Creek Stables of Cambridge, ON. With Sandhya, a selle Luxembourgeois mare by Silvio II, Henning finished as the runner-up while the Mill Creek-bred Oldenburg stallion, Sancho by Skorpio, finished fourth. Yet another Mill Creek Stables entry, Rin Tin Tin by Raphael, finished fifth under Dutch rider Sebastien Kapel.

Michael Grinyer of Campbellville, ON, topped the Four-Year-Old Division with Rio’s Ussuri W. Owned by Robert Astley, Rio’s Ussuri W is a Canadian Warmblood gelding by Rio Grande that was bred in Canada by the 2004 USEF Hunter Breeder of the Year, Augustin Walch and W. Charlot Farms.

Kevin Maxie of Puslinch, ON, rode the next two entries for owner and breeder Nikki Lishman. Simply Ahorn, a Canadian Warmblood gelding by Ahorn and out of a Landfriese II dam, placed second while Bobby’s Boy, a Canadian Warmblood gelding by Ariadus, was third.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development as four, five and six-year-olds. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series has been extended to include ten events. The next competition will take place on Friday, August 12, at the Collingwood Horse Show in Collingwood, ON.

The Ontario Hunter Jumper Association, together with its proud supporters - 4 Star Trailers, TD Waterhouse, Scotia McLeod, Peter Miller, Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, W. Charlot Farms, Gary Cooper Chev Olds, Henry Equestrian Insurance Brokers Ltd., Dutch Masters Construction Services Ltd., Dr. Al Manning, Brubacher’s Harness Shop, KingRidge Stables, Mr. Charles Ormston, the Hannoverian Breeders Club of Eastern Canada, Mr. Michael Boyd, Mrs. Elaine Gray, and other friends present the 2005 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series.
